August 24th 2018.
On August 24th 2018, the Bulfin Heritage Cycle Rally paid us a visit, on Day One of their heritage event.
The group, that follow in the ‘wheelrims’ of William Bulfin, who toured Ireland by bicycle in the early 1900’s, plotted their route around the heritage sites of Co. Laois.
Having visited the Irish Fly Fishing & Game Shooting Museum in Attanagh, Heywood Gardens, Ballinakill and G’s Gourmet Jams, they arrived in Timahoe, full of the joys of their travels.
After a ramble around the grounds of the Round Tower and Monastery, the group were treated to a “wonderful heritage talk, by Roghan Headen, who imparted his vast knowledge of the history of Timahoe.”
From the age of Vikings and Monks, to the famine years and the War of Independence, there was many a tale to tell, and all present were totally engrossed! Among the group were a number of Austrian cyclists, who even had a translator provided by the Bulfin Cycle!
All present were amazed by the sheer extent of Timahoe’s history, and would have stayed longer, but for a pressing schedule. After some refreshments, it was back on the bikes, and the vintage cyclists took the road for Stradbally, with the promise to return to Timahoe, on a future event!!
Timahoe Heritage Centre is a small museum dedicated to showcasing the monastic site and round tower of Timahoe. Playground tea and coffee available. Call 087 681 3116 for more details.
