Celebrating 1100 Years of Viking Monastic History
Timahoe Heritage Festival 2019
June 1st & 2nd 2019.
We are currently finalising details for our very first Timahoe Heritage Festival – The Viking Festival!
It is inspired by the Viking raid on Timahoe in the year 919 AD.
Below is a brief outline of what’s in store on June 1st & June 2nd, 2019!
Viking Festival Day One – Saturday June 1st 2019.
10:30 am “The March of the Vikings” 10 Mile road race from Vicarstown to Timahoe.
Follow the route the Vikings most likely took from the Viking fort in Dunrally to Timahoe. This challenging route will be a great healthy way to start the festivities.
A 5km route had also been added in the local environs of Timahoe. Both these races can be booked HERE.
From 12 pm in the surrounds of the Round Tower, kids will get a chance to enjoy the skills of Archeology, with the “Big Dig” company coming to town to educate us all. There will also be an opportunity to see what it was like to make coins in early medieval times.
Also we have wonderful displays in Viking weaponry, that simply have to be seen, and a chance to learn of, and sample some early medieval cooking.
There will also be other attractions on site to compliment the theme of the festival.
At 3.30pm The great Eddie Lenihan, the man with the big beard!! will captivate the kids with his ancient story telling session in the Heritage Centre. All children from 8 years upwards are very welcome. Eddie will give accounts of great, age old Irish traditions, and tales of how the Fairies can be little divil’s!!
Do you believe in Fairies! Eddie certainly does!
On Saturday night we will have a music event, with our performers yet to be confirmed, bur we will update as soon as possible!
Pubs – There will be music in both local pubs over the course of the Festival. On both days Tea and coffee plus ice cream will be available from the Corner shop.
Sunday 2nd June
The event will begin at 2pm and it will be a combination of the good old styled Irish Fun Family day out, coupled with the continuation of events of the previous day.
Oh and did we forget to mention VIKINGS!? You’ll see lots of Vikings!!!!
So why not come along in Fancy Dress, on Sunday 2nd June, and you may just win a prize; The theme for the Fancy Dress competition is Viking, Monks & Medieval!!!
We will also have a pageant to reinact the event of a Viking Raid on the Monastery.
Tune in for more information and updated information on all aspects of the festival.
